Alburtis Post Office Box Change to be Discussed at Borough Council Meeting
A public discussion will be held at 7 p.m. on June 30, at the Alburtis Community Center as part of the regularly scheduled Alburtis Borough Council. The topic meeting is the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) decision to start charging $50 for post office boxes or require each home to install a curbside mailbox for driving delivery, according to Rep. Doug Reichley (R-Berks/Lehigh).
The public meeting is to be held in conjunction with the regularly scheduled borough council meeting; however, due to expected higher-than-normal attendance, the place of the meeting is being changed.
At issue is a new USPS policy to charge post office box holders $50 annually or, to continue to get free mail service, to place a rural-style mailbox within sidewalks. However, this curbside mailbox option violates borough ordinance, which only permits mailboxes to be placed in grass areas between sidewalks and curbs.
“I want to see this matter resolved to everyone’s satisfaction, but due to state budget deliberations, it is likely that I will be in the state Capitol and unable to attend the meeting,” said Reichley. “I want to encourage the borough council and USPS to reach a compromise.”
The Alburtis Postmaster Carol Miller is expected to be in attendance at the meeting.
As always, constituents can feel free to contact Reichley at either of his district offices located at 1245 Chestnut St., Unit No. 5, Emmaus, phone number (610) 965-9933; or in Bally Brook Industrial Park on 20 N. Front St. in Bally, phone number (610) 845-1425.
